Contract With America's Children

WANTED:
A CONTRACT WITH AMERICA’S CHILDREN
As parents, family members, care givers, educators, concerned citizens and constituents we seek a commitment from our Members of Congress to make the health of America’s children their highest priority. We further request our leaders to reject the influence of corporations whose products or policies compromise the health and well being of our Nation’s most precious resource, our children.
America’s Children Are Sick. Why?
The statistics are staggering. Our children are suffering from an epidemic of neurodevelopmental, learning and behavioral disorders –
The number of children suffering from asthma, allergies, diabetes and obesity continues to grow. Prescription medications are given to millions of children for all of these disorders, regardless of efficacy and without full disclosure of side effects.
Why are our children so sick and what is government doing about it?
Children are often the most vulnerable to environmental insults. Although we are the richest country in the world, with access to the best in medical care and have the highest immunization rates, our Nation has the second worst newborn death rate in the modern world. The USA is ranked 20th among affluent nations in children's welfare.
A growing body of scientific research suggests extremely low levels of toxins in the environment and household products to which our children are exposed daily may contribute or cause many cancers, asthma, allergies, autoimmune disorders and the epidemic of autism and other developmental and learning disorders. These environmental toxins include mercury, aluminum, arsenic, lead, toxic mold, PCB's, pesticides, fluoride, and other industrial and household pollutants. These toxins are found in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the medications we take, and the products our children use in their everyday environment.
To the detriment of our children’s health and future, our government has ignored these sobering statistics and the concerns of parents. For years Congress has allowed industry lobbyists to be given easy access to influence and write legislation that would expose America’s children to more toxins, deny them insurance coverage, allow our children to be given drugs and vaccines without informed consent and deny them the right to compensation when injured.
The new 110th Congress offers the chance for our elected officials to get their priorities in order and to reject the ‘culture of corruption’ that has allowed the protection of corporate interests to prevail over the interests of children. The year 2007 can be the beginning of a Congress that respects the values and shares the faith of the American family and protects our most vulnerable citizens.
We respectfully request each Member of the 110th Congress to enter into a Contract with America’s Children that will make children’s health and product safety the highest priority and reject the special interest protections sought by the pharmaceutical, insurance and chemical industries that have compromised the good health, well being and civil rights of America’s children.
We ask for your commitment to immediately initiate the following five point reforms aimed at restoring the faith and trust of parents, your constituents, in their government:
FIRST: Always, ensure all laws passed PUT CHILD SAFETY FIRST.
SECOND: Legislation must make drug, vaccine and product safety the Number One priority for our Nation.
THIRD: Create a Children’s Health Task Force, whose members include representatives from parent organizations and Members of Congress, charged with pursuing an aggressive agenda that will examine why our children are so sick and develop policies and legislation to address the epidemic of disorders affecting America’s children.
FOURTH: Enact health insurance reform that ensures all children will get the care they need without discrimination and regardless of the nature of their disease or its cause.
FIFTH: Guarantee that industry representatives will not be permitted to write legislation that compromises children’s health.
There is no issue with greater moral imperative than protecting our Children’s Health. No Compromises! In asking our elected officials to demonstrate leadership by respecting and protecting our Nation’s most precious resource…our children, we are seeking a mandate for reform in the way Congress conducts the People’s business. We respectfully request your pledge to honor the Contract with America’s Children thereby establishing as our Nation's highest priority the protection of our children’s health.
